Honolulu’s Best Treats To Beat The Heat
Banana-based, non-dairy soft serve
If you’re looking for a healthy and unique Hawaiian treat, look no further than Banán. They use a special type of locally-grown banana to create the base of their delicious soft-serve. Since it’s made from fruit, it’s vegan and naturally sweetened — making an excellent guilt-free dessert!
Try flavors like Chocolate Mac Nut, Lilikoi (aka passion fruit), or my recommendation for the health-conscious — Greens — made with mint, Spiralina, ginger, and bananas for a super healthy boost! Don’t forget to add some toppings like shaved coconut, fresh fruit, mochi, or puffed quinoa.
This place is so good, I came back EVERY OTHER DAY to get another one. Try it and you may get hooked!
Tam’s Tip: Visit the University location for the most flavor choices.
Waiola Shave Ice
There are plenty of places to get shave ice (remember, it’s not “shaved ice” in Hawaii) on the island, but Waiola is arguably the best, and my personal favorite.
Away from the tourist areas, sitting in a Honolulu neighborhood, this shop sits unassumingly on the corner. There are no flashy gimmicks here. When you order your ice, you’ll get it in a small, paper cup or bowl along with a plastic spoon, and that’s it.
But make no mistake, this place has amazing Yelp reviews for good reason — the ice is soft, the price and portion size are the right amount, and the syrup to ice ratio here is perfection.
Nana’s Green Tea
Hoji soft serve ice cream
Nana’s is my go-to for hoji or matcha tea. It’s awesome when you’re on the Waikiki strip and want something cool and sweet to compliment those warm Hawaiian nights. You can find it on the underground floor of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza. There is an escalator that takes you down right from the Kalakaua Ave street entrance. Downstairs you’ll find a bustling marketplace, and tucked towards the back is Nana’s.
Get yourself a soft serve cone with mochi balls (my favorite), or any of the other many desserts and drinks.
Kokonuts Shave Ice & Snacks
This place is famous! President Obama has been here, and I can understand why. This place has some of the best smoothies I have ever tasted. On my most recent trip, I felt like having acai, and it was super smooth, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness.
In contrast, my friend made a rash decision and got an acai smoothie too, but from Jamba Juice right around the corner. Boy, was that a mistake — it didn’t even come close to tasting as delicious as Kokonuts. Do yourself a favor: skip Jamba and treat yourself to Kokonuts!
